L-O-V-E-D IT!

Until I read "Super" I didn't know rubber bands were so important. Super uses the bureaucracy of Pike County's super hero services department to poke gentle fun at the super hero universe. Each chapter starts with forms and quizzes one might get if you were actually applying for a superhero job in Pike County.

To push the story forward AD uses narrative documents describing events in the super hero's lives that one is supposed to comment on or refer to in the job application process. The reader gets to see the progress of the characters, and then is asked to answer several questions about the characters and their motives or actions, and the questions are often pretty funny.

In one chapter he ends with footnotes, but pretty soon his footnotes get out of control with footnotes to the footnotes to the footnotes- all the while giving us little clues about Superhero Tamara (level VII) who suddenly sees to the very end of time- or does she?

It's an interesting technique AD uses to view his own writing, thus allowing him to satirize, or comment on his own narrative. It's an ingenious way of structuring a story, and makes me wonder that nobody thought of this sooner. You might think "What's funny about bureaucracies?" The answer is- Everything.

I loved the story and the characters, and can't wait to read more if AD decides to expand on this universe and these characters. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "Never was so much owed by so many, to so few rubber bands."

Super Aaron Dietz 9780975362396 Books Reviews

After reading this I gave it to my daughter, so my grandson could read it. A very funny book indeed!
Super is by far one of the most original, influential books I've ever read. It inspired me to write again after long giving up on the book format. You can only stand back and gaze adoringly at all the tremendous effort and thought put into it. Not only that; you can read it, too. You can even participate by writing in it, and it won't even ruin the book. If anything, it'll make it all the more entertaining. Every time I hold it I think to myself "HOW DID HE THINK OF THIS? I WANT TO PUNCH AARON IN THE FACE FOR BEING SO CREATIVE AND AWESOME." Actually, I didn't think that part about punching him in the face.

What I did think, sincerely, is that Aaron Dietz and this book makes me want to be a better writer. And I just want to kick him a little. Not hard, though, it won't even leave a bruise. Just a love-kick.

All told, Super is a fantastic reader-challenging-thought-inducing-brain-food-heart-having-easily-accessible-brilliant-engrossing-from-the-get-go-to-the-last-page-doing-thinking-soul-having-hooomg-the-characters-are-awesome-the-universe-is-a-place-I-wish-we-actually-lived-in-I-suck-at-reviews-but-I-really-love-this-book... Plus, what everyone else wrote here. They said it best.

Super is a unique and refreshing read. I love to read but have ADHD and don't end up getting through many (any) books any more but Super is impossible not to finish! Unpredictable, untraditional, un-boring! Aaron Dietz has an unusual talent for saying a lot with few words. I love it and recommend it!
What an original book ! While the story is a bit quirky it does evolve through each chapter and draws us into the world of super heros in a progressive way - a fun quick read would be the best way to qualify this work.
The book has two really good things going for it it's funny and it's so insanely creative that it's a delight to turn every page. On the other hand, the bizarre format of the book - a series of performance reviews and psychological assessments of an institutional Superhero - makes the story hard to follow. I'm going to have to go back and read the book again, maybe a couple times, before I'll understand what exactly happened.
As a testament to how hypnotic this book is, I missed my stop on BART because I was so engrossed in the wildly inventive story that Aaron Dietz weaves in this book. You'll find yourself wanting to fill out the tests within and re-reading the text to find out more and more as it reveals itself over multiple readings. This is a seriously great book.
Once and awhile something will come along unexpected, different, and totally enjoyable. I would put Super in that class.

The format of Super was something that I wasn't expecting when I opened the book, a story woven in with various government documents around the superhero industry and the job hiring/training process. So not only did you have an interesting novel going on but you had all these documents with an incredible sense of detail which were hilarious to read that tied together the story.

Super was just a flat out enjoyable read. If you have a dry sense of humor, enjoy super hero mythology, or enjoy experimental fiction it is worth picking up.
