My biggest problem with this book is the pricing. $5 for a 100 page kindle book seems way out of line to me. I do like the heroine. She does not do stupid things and is very competent in her skills. She is probably the most "matter of fact, non-reactive" heroine I've read in a long time. You do not get "feelings" in this book and you only get hints of what people are thinking. In a weird way that makes for a very 'clean' read. Kind of like the old detective stories. The sex thing is a little weird with her sleeping with everyone on her policing team, but then she is not human. I did enjoy the book but I will not be buying more until these short, over-priced stories are either put together in one decently priced book or the prices for these short stories are more reasonable.

One Part Human An Obscure Magic Book 1 edition by Viola Grace Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

I have never read a book quite like this one before.. But I can easily see myself being Drawn into the storylines of Benny and her Family AS well as the XIA Agent's in HER group.... I hope that Viola Grace WILL extend HER books to focus on each of Benny's relationships with "HER " XIA AGENT'S !! That would be some interesting reading too...πŸΈπŸ’–
I thought this was very cool and witty. I started the book and didn't put it down until the end. I can't wait to see what happens next, but I think I need to eat before I buy the next book in the series.
So cool!
I found this series on as a suggestion. Loved it from the start. I bought several more books of this series right away. Great Author, great story. Lots of laughs and also twists and turns. Can't wait to read the next book in this series.
Grace is very prolific across several genres, but tends to write short formula romances. This one is about a women with many different supernatural species in her makeup who rides along with the local supernatural law enforcement. It is short like always, but dials back the sloppy romance to tell a nice quick if shallow story. Its real weakness is a rather high price for a book just over 100 pages.
I couldn't even finish this book. It had an interesting concept, but $5 for 100 pages is a bit steep. It would have been easier if the book was actually good. Instead, there was very stilted, wooden dialogue. The characters seemed to have the same personality, which was basically no personality at all. And I couldn't figure out what the big deal was. In the beginning it was all "what if they smell you and figure out what you are?", 10 pages later she's opening a vein for the vampire and using her skills like they're going out of style. I ended up returning this book. I couldn't bear to waste any more of my life reading it.
It wasn't till the end of the book that the author says there is another book, "Under his claw" that precedes this one so I'm wondering why this was labeled the first book. I'm guessing there must be the bulk of the world building in that book as there was none in this one.
It definitely felt like you were dropping into the middle of something, the lore didn't make sense, but it was like you were supposed to know what's going on. There seems to be no chemistry between the characters apart from food, but all of a sudden they are "together". There is hardly any acknowledgement of their individual characters so really hard to feel invested in this. I love this genre and wanted to love this book but just couldn't get over how disjointed it seemed. It felt very rushed and the characters and plot were so random I'm disappointed I bought the first two books based on the fact the author has written so much it must be good. Guess not. Bummer!
Pros - interesting magic and family, wild magical and supernatural race mix.

Cons - 1. incredibly stilted dialogue. The reviewer who said 'normal people use contractions' was absolutely right. Some of the dialogue sounded like it was translated from German, or some other much more formal tongue, and given the subject matter, the overly formal speech was especially grating.

2. The insta-relationships. The immediate sexual teasing, seductive behavior between the 4 leads was ungrounded in anything. No explanation of differing race sexualities, no talk of Benny's heritages, no reason why these professionals would immediately start flirting with her. It gets explained (sort-of) later, but makes no sense at first.

3. One of the first things we're told about Benny is that she's had to hide what she is her whole life, so the ridealong with the XIA agents is terribly dangerous for her. Okay, that makes sense, except that the author immediately has Benny contradicting herself. One moment she's afraid of being exposed, the next she's spilling everything to these XIA people and bringing them to meet her parents and family. So why all the initial angst about Benny being outed?
What makes this fear even less believable is that everyone else in her family is now saying, "We desperately needed to hide you before, but now you've got no choice but to deal with everyone finding out, and it will be good for you, so don't worry." Even more inconsistently, despite the big fuss she made at the beginning of the book, Benny now seems completely unconcerned that so many people know her secrets. Sorry, but having lived in hiding all her life, a person can't just flip a switch and turn all that habitual caution off....yet Benny seems to do just that. It makes no sense and neither does too much else in this story. So far it seems like a pastiche written more perhaps for the magic and sexual pairings than to carry the plot of the story.
My biggest problem with this book is the pricing. $5 for a 100 page kindle book seems way out of line to me. I do like the heroine. She does not do stupid things and is very competent in her skills.
