Excerpt from New School Algebra
The definitions and explanations contained in these chapters should be carefully read at first; after the learner has become familiar with algebraic Operations, special atten tion should be given to the principal definitions.
The third chapter contains a simple explanation Of nega tive numbers. The recognition Of the fact that the real nature of subtraction is counting backwards, and that the real nature of multiplication is forming the product from the multiplicand precisely as the multiplier is formed from unity, makes an easy road to the laws of addition and sub traction Of algebraic numbers, and to the law of signs in multiplication and division. All the principles and rules of this chapter are illustrated and enforced by numerous examples involving simple algebraic expressions only.

I just started tutoring my friend's daughter in algebra. Looking through many of the modern algebra textbooks, I couldn't really find a good one. Even the one's that were highly recommended like Kaufmann's Algebra for College Students felt lacking in some way.I wanted the Algebra books that I used to learn back in the early 80's but since it's so long ago, I have no idea what authors to search for.
Luckily I found this book, written more than 100 years ago. The thing that's awesome about these problem sets is that they build up logically the way a student learns the material. Not to bash Kaufmann's Algebra, which is pretty good, but the problem sets build up logically based on how the math professor's think, not how students think.
The problem sets teach very specific skills and are perfect to copy and use.
If you are teaching Algebra in the classroom, or as a tutor, I highly recommend this one. If you have any other suggestions please reply here.
Thanks.
